The Bruin boys varsity baseball team hosted the 1-2 Douglas Trojans Wednesday afternoon, looking to continue their win-streak and add another win to their 3-0 record.
Coming off a perfect game in his last outing, senior Jason DeShon #16, took the hill for coach Keith Wallin, and started Wednesday’s game right where he left off last Friday, striking out the side on 15 pitches. The Bruin offense made the Trojans work for every out in their half of the first, forcing 40 pitches from the Douglas pitcher in the bottom of the first inning, as junior Kyle Burger, #5, took the pitcher deep to left field with a 325 ft. solo home-run over the wall in left field, giving the Bruins an early 1-0 lead.
The Douglas lead-off batter would manage a 6 pitch walk off of DeShon to start the Trojans half of the second inning, but three consecutive strike-outs would silence any Douglas chances of working the runner into scoring position, or scoring, In the Bruins half of the second, Douglas pitching would retire the first two Bruin batters he faced, but a walk, and a batter hit by a pitch, would put two on for sophomore Ethan Orman, #22. Orman sent a ball to the wall in right field, clearing the bases with a triple, setting up a DeShon grounder that would score Orman also, giving the Bruins a comfortable 4-0 lead.
DeShon continued to dominate Douglas batters, throwing 9 pitches in the top half of the third, retiring the Trojan batters in order, striking-out two. But in bottom half of the third, Trojan pitcher sophomore Tristan Ledbetter, returned the favor, striking-out the Bruin side in order on 12 pitches.
Trojan batters continued to struggle at the plate in the fourth, failing to get any runners on the basepaths, going down in order. The Bruin offense went to the plate determined to put runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together four singles, a walk and a double to add 5 more runs to the score, taking a 9-0 lead into the fifth.
Douglas had no answer for DeShon’s pitching all day, and DeShon made sure to eliminate any offensive chance of a Trojan rally by again, striking out the side, in order, on 9 pitches. Bruin batters would load the bases again, and end the game drawing a bases loaded walk to take the 10-0 win.
The Bruins will see this same Trojan team this Friday when they travel to Winston to complete the series with a Friday afternoon double-header and first pitch scheduled for 3:00pm.
