Bruin boys football hosted the #1 OSAA ranked Siuslaw Vikings who made the trip from Florence to challenge the Bruins in their last homegame of the season Friday night.
The Bruins received the kick and would punt to the Vikings after the first offensive series stalled. Siuslaw would put together a sustained drive with Bruin defense holding the Vikings in check early, before the Vikings broke a 29 yard run to score and take an early 0-8.
The slick field and hard hits hurt the Bruins on their next offensive series, putting the ball on the field on their own 26 yard line leaving a short field for the powerful Viking offense. The Vikings would complete a 26 yard touchdown pass minutes later.
Now looking at 0-16 deficit, the Bruin kick return team and sophomore Owen Austin, #12 would answer immediately with some key blocks and two cuts by Austin who would cover the 80 yard kick off return relatively untouched, getting the Bruins on the scoreboard.
In the next Siuslaw offensive series, a 20 yard screen pass would beat the Bruin defense to the edge and down the sideline for another Viking score followed by an 80 yard sweep for another Siuslaw touchdown to the first quarter leading 6-32.
The Bruin defense slowed the Viking attack in the second period allowing only two Siuslaw scores in the period going into the halftime break.
In the third period the Bruins made adjustments which led to a freshman, #9 Kaedin Soica interception stepping in front of the receiver followed by a big return. But a Bruin turnover in the backfield would end the drive.
The Vikings would put together a long drive, threatening on the Bruin half of field before fumbling in their own backfield and picked up by Austin, who finished the job himself this time, returning the ball 76 yards for a Bruin touchdown.
Another Viking turnover would be picked up by senior Cameryn Brown, #56, and returned the ball inside the Viking 20 yard line before sophomore receiver Owen Austin, #12, would catch the 18 yard quarterback Grady Maylin pass into the endzone late in the fourth period.
Siuslaw would finish the game strong taking home the 20-55 win.
The Bruins will finish regular season play on the road next Friday evening, traveling to Winston to take on the Trojans with kickoff scheduled for 7:00pm.
