Bruins Basketball Manhandled by Sutherlin

The boys varsity basketball team traveled to the home of the Sutherlin Bulldogs Friday night and ran into an undefeated Bulldog team that sent a message to the Bruins that the 1 point loss that the Bulldogs handed them earlier in the season, was not a fluke.

The Bruins managed to stay with the Bulldogs in the first period holding the Bulldogs to just 7 points in the period and scoring 7 points themselves.

Taking a 7-7 tie into the second period, the Bruins had no answer for the Bulldogs who dominated Coach Gonzales’ team from end to end. The defensive game kept the score low as the Bruins managed only 13 points in the first half of play.

In the second half, the Bulldogs came out and continued to frustrate the Bruins who could not score inside the paint or from the perimeter. The Bulldogs 6’7″ JR Bailey dominated the paint and forced the Bruins to alter their shots throughout the night. Poor outside shooting could not make up the difference as the Bruins managed only 6 points while the defense allowed the Bulldogs to extend their lead to 19-26 in the third period.

In the final period, the Bruins could only manage another 6 points while the defense allowed the Bulldogs to score 14 points as the Bulldogs sent the Bruins home with a 26-40 loss.

Things will not get any easier as the now 4-3 Bruins will be on the road next Tuesday evening traveling to the 5-2 St. Mary’s Crusaders who will be coming off of an 88-52 win over the Douglas Trojans.
