The Bruins Varsity Boys Basketball team took to the floor Friday afternoon and looked like a different team than the team we saw on Thursday. The Bruins trailed after the first quarter to the Lower Lake Trojans 16-10, but would take control of the game in the second quarter with a 24 point quarter while holding the Trojans to only 4 points, taking a 34-20 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Bruins came out in a man to man defense that frustrated the Trojan offense causing turnovers and missed shots. The Bruins also aggressively attacked the Trojan 2-3 zone, but the Trojans kept it close in the third period as they scored 8 points to the Bruins 9 points in the third period.
The aggressive game of the Bruins would commit some untimely fouls allowing the Trojans to close the gap in the fourth period. The Trojans would get within 4 with less than 1:20 left in the game, but a Bruin timeout and following set play drawn up by Coach Gonzales would put the Bruins up by 6 with less than a minute on the clock. Lower Lake would then work themselves into an open 3-point shot and sink it with seconds left cutting the Bruin lead in half.
However, the 24 point Bruin second quarter earlier in the game would prove to be too much for the Trojans to overcome, as the varsity boys would go on to win the game with a final score of 51-46.
The Bruins will play a third-round game today at noon.
