And just like that, we’re well into the first week of school and the sounds of whistles, great plays and cheering crowds are ushering in the 2023/24 Fall prep sports programs, and head coach Vanessa Nidifer and her varsity girls volleyball team were no exception, hosting the Hwy. 101 rivalry with the Del Norte Lady Warriors Wednesday night before league play begins next week.
The Lady Warriors came out of the gate ready play, setting up their offense at the net and keeping the Bruin girls from establishing themselves early, jumping out to a 3-13 lead in the first set and would quickly go on to take a one set lead.
In the second set, the Bruin girls found their legs and refused to let the powerful Lady Warrior team to establish any substantial lead. The Bruin girls established a presence at the net and scrambled to get to digs to keep play alive, forcing Del Norte errors. This kept the Bruin girls in the set trailing 12-13 at one point in the set.
The Bruin girls would take a 15-14 lead moments later in the second set, as both teams traded points late trying to take control, however, it would be the Lady Warriors who would get the final 3 points and taking the 22-25 second set win.
In the third set, Del Norte did not let the Bruin girls get any momentum, shutting down any attempts to string any points together after the closely contested second set, jumping out to a 2-12 lead early, keeping up the scoring and running away with a one sided win to take the third and final set.
The Bruin girls will be home next Tuesday evening to start season league play hosting the Cascade Christian Lady Challengers Tuesday evening at 6:00pm.
