After suffering two stinging close losses and taking the 2nd ranked team in the state to OT Saturday, the Bruin girls were home Wednesday evening to take on the 2-5 South Umpqua Lady Lancers.
With the comfort of home and the sting of their two losses still fresh on their minds, the Bruin girls had one thing on their mind from the opening tip, and that was winning. The Bruin girls wasted no time dismantling the Lady Lancer gameplan, applying defensive pressure on the South Umpqua ball handler, forcing turnovers and beating the Lady Lancers down the floor for easy baskets to take a first quarter 19-5 lead.
The Lady Lancers did however find some offense in the second period, spreading the ball around to four scorers, for 14 points in the period. The Bruin girls shooting cooled off in the second as senior forward, #44, Ashlyn Schofield, was responsible for all 8 points for the Bruin girls in the period to take a 27-19 point lead into the locker room at the half.
Sitting on what at the time felt like a comfortable 8 point lead, the Bruin girls were not comfortable enough, again slowing the Lady Lancer offense by pressuring their point, the Bruin girls defense allowed only 10 points in the period from three South Umpqua shooters while piling on another 20 points in the period from 5 Bruin girl scorers led by sophomore Jaiden Babb’s two 3 pointers in the period.
The Bruin girls went into the fourth period with a substantial 47-29 lead and continued to apply defensive pressure up the floor to keep the Lady Lancers from getting in any shooting rhythm, again holding the Lady Lancer offense to just 10 points in the period. The Bruin girls would put 12 points on the board to finish off the night and take the decisive 59-39 win.
The Bruin girls look to put together another win Friday evening hosting the Glide Lady Wildcats at Bruin arena at 5:30pm.
