Brookings-Harbor Bruin girls softball started its pre-season in mid-March with a convincing win at home against Reedsport. The Bruin girls have since gone 4-2, racking up 48 runs in those six games.
On Monday, the Bruin girls hosted the Marshfield Lady Pirates in another pre-season match-up before regular season play begins in mid April.
Senior pitcher, Maddy Taylor #22, took the circle for the Bruin girls and sat the first three batters she faced down with a strike-out and two shallow pop ups. Offensively in the first inning, the Bruin girls put two on base with 2 outs, before freshman Kami Koepnick, #14, sent a line drive shot over the right center field wall for a 3 run homer.
Taylor continued to over power Marshfield batters, adding another strike-out in the top of the 2nd on her way to another scoreless inning. Patience at the plate for the Bruin girls paid off in the bottom of the 2nd after two would score off of a Jordan Crosby double after walking to put two on base.
With a comfortable lead going into the top of the 3rd, Taylor struck-out the next two batters she faced, before Jo Pryor, #6, picked up a bunt and threw the runner out to retire the side. An error and a walk started the bottom of the 3rd for the Bruin girls before senior Charlie Nolte, #7, hit a fly ball that scored one. That would set the table for senior Hannah James, #5, senior Jordan Crosby, #6, and Maddy Taylor, #22, to string together 4 hits putting 3 more points on the board.
Despite striking out two more batters in the top of the 4th, Marshfield would get their first run of the game off of a triple and a couple of Bruin girls errors. In the bottom of the 4th, Marshfield’s pitching found its groove, holding the Bruin girls scoreless after facing five batters.
Marshfield batters also managed some points in the top of the 5th after seeing Taylor for the third time through the lineup, adding 3 runs off of a double, an error and two walks. Bruin bats were quiet again in the bottom of the 5th, getting only four batters to the plate in the inning.
Marshfield would go on to add a couple more runs in the final innings, but good Bruin pitching and timely hitting early, was too much for the Lady Pirates to overcome late, and the Bruin girls would go on to secure the 12-6 victory.
The Bruin girls will be home again Thursday, hosting 3-3 Bandon Lady Tigers with the first pitch at 3:30.
