It a appears that Douglas’ road win against the Bruin girls softball team Wednesday afternoon may have awoken a sleeping giant, as the Bruin girls went on the road to Winston Friday and sent a message to not only the Lady Trojans, but anyone doubting their offensive firepower, putting up 30 runs in two games.
In the first game of Fridays double header to complete the 3 game series, BHHS pitcher Maddy Taylor #22, carrying Wednesdays loss with her, stepped into the circle and shut down the Lady Trojan offense for three innings, allowing only 1 run in the fourth inning. Senior Jordan Crosby, #11, relieved Taylor in the fifth inning, allowing no hits and striking out 2, holding the Lady Trojans to just 1 point.
Offensively, the Bruin girls put 2 runs in the book to start the game, and scored in every inning except the second racking up 11 runs with 4 of those runs coming the third inning after stringing together a double and four singles. The Bruin girls defense committed no errors in 6 innings of play, while going 12 for 29 from the plate as a team, scoring 11 with 9 RBI to take the first game win, 11-1.
In the second game of the afternoon, game 3 in the series, the Bruin girls not only picked up where they left off, but doubled their offensive production. The Bruin girls would go down in order in the top of the first, while allowing Douglas to score in their half of the first inning. But the second inning was a different story as the Bruin girls would rally with 2 outs to score 8 runs in the inning stringing together a double, five singles and two walks to take a 8-2 lead after two innings.
In the top of the third, the Bruin girls would strike again, adding 6 more runs after getting their lead-off batter, Charlie Nolte, #7, after being hit by a pitch, and working for five singles, and two hit batters and a sacrifice making the score 14-2 going into the Douglas half of the inning. Now pushed into the corner, trailing by 11, the Lady Trojans came out swinging, adding 7 runs of their own putting pressure on the Bruin girls defense, and forcing two BHHS errors in the inning.
With the score now 14-9 Bruins to start the fourth inning, two singles following another hit batter would start the scoring again for the Bruin girls, adding 3 more runs from two singles and a #2 Cam Crosby double. Douglas again tried to keep pace with the Bruin girls adding two more runs of their own, making the Bruin girls lead, 17-11.
Maddy Taylor started in the circle for the Bruin girls in the second game, throwing the first inning, allowing one hit and 1 run before senior right-hander, Jordan Crosby, #11 would take the reigns in the second, going 5 innings, allowing 12 runs, on 9 hits and striking out 4. Both teams would add two more runs to their totals in the final innings, but the Bruin girls would take the 19-13 win as well as the series 2-1, with both teams winning on the road.
The now 5-1 Bruin girls will be at home next Tuesday afternoon, hosting the 0-4 Cascade Christian Lady Challengers at 4:00pm.
