Coming off a two game win streak, the Bruin girls hosted the 3-1 Coquille Lady Red Devils Wednesday evening, hoping to continue to add the win column.
A defensive battle broke out in the first period as both teams struggled to find the basket early and defensive pressure from both teams made it difficult for shooters to find a rhythm, keeping the score a low 2-3 midway through the first period. The quarter would continue to see missed shots and turnovers as the Bruin girls managed a 7-4 lead to end the period.
In the second period, the Bruin girls established the fast break, and senior point guard Rockette Marrington, #12, led the Bruin girls to seven point lead at the halfway point of the first, driving to the basket off of Lady Red Devil turnovers. Senior Ashlyn Scofield, #44, added five points including a 3 pointer as senior center Marissa Scott, #15 shut down the lane defensively for the Bruin girls who would go on to take a 20-11 lead into the locker room at halftime.
But in the third, the Bruin girls would struggle offensively, finding it difficult to get open shots against the Lady Red Devil halftime adjustments. Sophomore guard Amelia Bruce, #0, would break down the Coquille defense on more than one occassion hitting for 5 Bruin girls points including a 3 pointer. But the Bruin girls defense would not be able to handle Lady Red Devil point guard who hit four buckets for 9 points to help the Lady Red Devils outscore the Bruin girls 9-11 in the period and close the lead to 28-21.
The fourth period would start slow with the Bruin girls only hitting for 4 points early as the Lady Red Devils closed the gap hitting for 7 points to close the lead to just 4 points with less than 2:00 minutes left to play. The Bruin girls frantically looked to score late in the period as Coquille surged offensively, taking the Bruin girls out of the shots and forcing them to earn their points at the line. The Bruin girls went 4 for 7 from the line down the stretch, but it would be a late Schofield 3 pointer that would keep the game out of reach of the Lady Red Devils, handing the Bruin girls their third straight win late with a final score of 36-31.
The Bruin girls will finish out the week on the road to Winston to take on the 3-2 Lady Trojans, tipping off at
