Looking to put last week behind them and return to putting wins together, the Bruin girls varsity basketball team and head coach Chris Schofield hosted the the 3-5 St. Mary’s Lady Crusaders, and coach Schofield put forward a game plan to do just that.
The Bruin girls took advantage of their height inside, dumping into the paint as Ashlyn Schofield #44 and #15 Marissa Scott combined for 8 points with Scott hitting two tough inside baskets, and Schofield hitting a basket and going 2 for 3 from the line. The Lady Crusaders tried to keep pace early, getting four players on the scoreboard in the period, but the Bruin girls Zoe Carlson, #11, hit a 3 pointer from outside as Brookings put up 11 points, to take a 11-7 lead after the first period of play.
Trailing 11-7 to start the second period, the Lady Crusaders attacked the paint, putting up 9 points and getting to the line three times in the period. Zoe Carlson #11 hit two baskets for 4 points while Ashlyn Schofield #44 fought in the paint for her 4 points with a basket and hitting 2 of 3 from the foul line as the Bruin girls added to their lead taking a 23-16 lead into the locker room at the half.
The third period turned into a defense struggle fraught with turn-overs and missed fast break opportunities from both teams. Point guard Rockette Marrington #12, hit a 3 pointer early in the third as the Lady Crusaders hit one basket to account for all 5 points scored by both teams in the period as the Bruin girls clung to a 26-18 lead going into the final period.
In a frantic fourth period, senior Skylar Gallagher #3, Zoe Carlson, #11, #15 Marissa Scott and Ashlyn Schofield #44 all had baskets for the Bruin girls, but missed opportunities at the free throw line from the Bruin girls after going 4 of 10 from the line kept the Lady Crusaders close late. The Lady Crusaders would get 10 points in the period, 6 from the foul line, but the 12 points scored by the Bruin girls would be too much for St. Mary’s to overcome, as they would go to get the ten point, 38-28 win.
The now 6-3 Bruin girls will be on the road for their final scheduled regular season game, traveling to Myrtle Point to take on the 2-3 Lady Lancers at 7:00pm.
