Coming off a two game winning streak after scoring 45 runs, the Bruin girls varsity softball team hosted a very strong and undefeated South Umpqua team that wasted no time to demonstrate why they are undefeated in a Saturday afternoon double header.
A solid Lady Lancer team got off the bus in Brookings Saturday afternoon, and immediately jumped out to a six run lead and did not look back, holding the Bruin girls offense scoreless.
South Umpqua put together 17 runs off of 14 hits in the first game of the double header, holding the Bruin girls scoreless after allowing only two Bruin girls hits in the game.
The fundamentally strong Lady Lancers continued their dominance into the second game Monday afternoon, again taking an early three run lead in the first inning, and again keeping the Bruin girls bats quiet early in the game.
The Bruin girls held their ground in the second inning, keeping the Lady Lancers off the board to keep the lead at just three runs, but the Bruin girls offense could not take advantage, failing to close the gap before South Umpqua would add 5 more runs in the third inning to take an eight run lead into the fourth inning.
Again the Lady Lancers would work runners across the plate, scoring 2 more runs in the top of the fourth. But in the fourth inning, the Bruin girls would score their first runs of the afternoon, putting 3 runs on the board.
But holding a 7 run lead going into the fifth, the Lady Lancers would add 4 more runs in the top of the inning, before shutting down the Bruin girls bats in the bottom of the fifth, to take the 3-14 win Saturday afternoon.
The Bruin girls will see their next action on the road, traveling to Grants Pass Thursday for a double header against the 4-8 North Valley Lady Knights, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00pm.
