The Bruin girls and head coach Kara Miller hosted their first homegame of the 2022/23 girls basketball team, taking on the Gold Beach Lady Panthers Friday evening.
The Lady Panthers made the trip down Hwy. 101 to challenge the Bruin girls, who were looking to continue the Hwy. 101 rivalry with a win as well as use the game as an opportunity to get ready for regular season play just a day away.
The Bruin girls came out ready to play from the opening whistle, however, the Lady Panthers were no match this season, with only seven girls on their roster.
The Bruin girls jumped out early, picking up a 2-3 press on the Lady Panthers at mid court, forcing turnovers and fast break opportunities. The press not only broke down the Gold Beach attack, but also allowed the Bruin girls fast break basket opportunities that did not allow the Lady Panther defense to get set, as the Bruin girls held the Lady Panthers scoreless in the first period.
With a 22-0 lead after the first period of play, Bruin girls head coach Kara Miller took the opportunity to rotate most of her players, including bench players valuable game time minutes on the floor.
The Lady Panthers were under attack from the opening whistle, and though out gunned from the beginning continued to challenge the Lady Bruins through out the game, working to get into their defensive packages as well as their offensive schemes.
But, with only seven players on the Lady Panther roster, it was a long night for Gold Beach who just did not have the personnel to properly challenge the Bruin girls, and ultimately the Bruin girls took a very lopsided win going into regular season play.
The Bruin girls will be on the road to start their regular season, traveling to Grants Pass to take on the North Valley Lady Knights with tip off scheduled for 7:30pm.
