As we move into winter sports programs, the Brookings-Harbor Bruin girls and new head coach Kara Miller have spent the past few weeks in the gym and primarily on the road participating in pre-season tournaments putting together their 2022/23 program and getting in game shape.
Saturday evening the Bruin girls hosted the Gold Beach Lady Panthers in what has become a treat for fans from both teams over the past few years.
The Bruin girls, putting four seniors on the floor to start this season, took full advantage of being at home and jumped out to an early lead on the Lady Panthers to start the game, taking an 11-0 lead mid-way through the first quarter. Senior guard Rockette Marrington, #12, led the way for the Bruin girls with two baskets and two free throws for 6 points as the Bruin girls finished the first leading 13-4.
The Bruin girls 2-3 defense with high pressure led to Lady Panther turn-overs and fast break opportunities as the the Bruin girls continued to stifle the Gold Beach offense. The Bruin girls looked sharp running through their offensive plays and picked up where they left off in the first extending their lead to 19-6 four minutes into the second period before exploding for 11 more points with senior guard Zoe Carlson leading the way 7 points in the period.
Leading comfortably to start the second half with a 30-9 lead, the Bruin girls added to their lead early, however, Gold Beach opened up their offensive attack, spreading out the Bruin girl defense and opening the floor for their shooters. Gold Beach senior Gabby Perez, #3 found her outside shot for two 3 pointer in the period as the Lady Panthers put 16 points on the board in the third period.
But the Bruin girls offense continued to control the game gaming going into the final period of play extending their lead to 43-25 to start the fourth with a 18 point lead. The Lady Panther continued to try and close the gap, driving on the Bruin girls defense and getting to line 6 times in the period. But the Lady Panthers could not get the free throws to fall, and the Bruin girls closed the door, adding 19 more points in the period to end the game 62-32, Bruin girls.
The Bruin girls will be home again Tuesday evening, December 13th, in another pre-season match up hosting North Bend at 5:30pm.
