Saturday afternoon marked the final game of the regular season for the Bruins varsity football team, and the Bruins would do it in Winston Oregon, taking on the 3-5 Douglas Trojans.
Early afternoon temperatures in the low 70’s under mostly clear skies made Saturday afternoon a perfect day for football. Douglas received the opening kick-off and tested the Bruin defense early. Putting together an opening drive, the Trojans would find the endzone early on, scoring in just under 3:00 minutes.
Now trailing 6-0, the Bruins looked to tie the game, however, senior quarterback Kyle Burger, #15, would throw an interception, leading to another touchdown, extending Winstons early lead to 14-0.
A fired up Douglas Trojan team, celebrating their senior night as well as their final game of the 2022/23 season, would hold no punches, recovering an onside kick as well as forcing Bruin turn-overs to establish a comfortable 40-0 lead at the halftime break.
Douglas would increase the score even further before senior quarterback Kyle Burger hit senior #8, Kallen Christensen with a pass. Christensen would shed a defender and find his way into the endzone, very late in the final quarter, making the score 52-8, Trojans.
“We’re proud of our guys for playing hard all four quarters and few of our young guys for stepping up and playing in some important minutes in the game.” Bruins head coach Shaun Bavaro told the Compass after the game.
“I would also give a hats off to our seniors this year…” coach Bavaro continued. “Kallen Christensen, #8, for being a solid leader for the team and playing through injuries all year. Ralph Cavazos #79, for the sacrifice he made for the team moving a position to make us better. First time player Ethan Knuass #68, for being a great teammate and playing multiple positions this year. Uriel Cortes, #36, coming out and playing his first ever year of football, showing tremendous growth throughout the season and made some really nice plays both on offense and defense for us. #11, Seth Vallire, he had some big time plays for us this season, and Kyle Burger, #14, who was our best player on both sides of the ball.”
“We’re also excited for the kids coming back next year, we played a lot of young kids and they have shown great growth throughout the season.”
