Bruin varsity football took the field Saturday afternoon to close out their 2023/24 season against the Douglas Trojans who made the trip from Winston challenge the Bruins on a picture perfect fall day for football.
The Bruins received the kick to start the game before punting after their first offensive drive ended with an interception after moving the ball to mid-field. Douglas then put together a drive that would start the scoring after pushing the ball into the endzone to take a 0-6 lead with 5:30 left in the first period.
Douglas could not stop the Bruins on the next series after the Trojan touchdown, driving down the Douglas 30 yard line before Grady Maylin hit senior Kyler Christensen, #2, in stride and outran the defense into the endzone to knot the score at 6-6 with just seconds left in the first quarter.
The second quarter of play turned into a turnover fest, with both teams exchanging possession multiple times in the period with the Bruins defense getting a turnover on downs after a sack on a Trojan fourth down conversion attempt. But Douglas would win the quarter on a 20 yard pass to take a 6-13 lead into the half time break.
After receiving the ball to start the second half, the Trojans attacked the Bruin defense early looking to capitalize on the touchdown to close the first half, but Bruin freshman defensive back Owen Austin, #10, had a different idea, intercepting and errant Douglas pass and returning it 25 yards for a touchdown to make the score 12-13 less than a minute into the third period.
Douglas would then put together a drive to score again with 4:30 left in the third period and again in the fourth as turn overs and fouls would trouble the Bruins for much of the second half making the final score 12-27 Trojans.
“The kids battled all season.” coach Bavaro told the Compass after the game. “We saw many freshman and sophomores step up this season and make plays on both sides of the ball. Proud of our 5 seniors for their effort, it was good group of guys! and the Football program wishes them nothing but success in their future!”
