Bruin boys basketball was back in action after splitting two games on the road with a loss at St. Mary’s and win at Rogue River last Friday, taking on a powerful undefeated Douglas Trojan team coming off a decisive win against St. Mary’s Wednesday.
The Trojans came out and pressed the Bruins from the opening tip, forcing play and Bruins turnovers as they struggled to get the ball out of their own half of the court, with Douglas jumping out to an early 0-10 lead. Mid way through the first period, the Bruins put 4 points on the board, but even after finding the basket, the Bruins trailed 14-28 after the first period.
Douglas continued to pressure the Bruins ball handlers and running off of Brookings-Harbor miscues and extending their lead in the first half of the second period to 25 points. The Bruins continued to struggle against the Trojan defense, putting up just 9 points in quarter, and trailed 23-48 at the half.
To start the second half, the Bruin offense kept pace with the Trojans, getting four players in the scorebook with senior Ethan Orman leading the Bruins with 4 points in the period. But Douglas continued to score, adding 17 points in the period to extend their lead to 31 points to close out the third period.
With a commanding lead to start the final period, the Trojan defense continued to make the Bruins earn every point, allowing only 8 Brookings-Harbor points in the final period as they extended their lead to 32 points, and take the road win 41-73.
The Bruins will have a quick turn-around with their next game today, Saturday afternoon, taking on the 1-5 Sutherlin Bulldogs, coming off loss to St. Mary’s Friday night, with an early Saturday afternoon tip-off scheduled at 1:30pm.
