Luke Beaman and his BHHS boys varsity basketball team started their season at home hosting the Rogue River Chieftains Tuesday evening jumped on the opportunity to erase their last minute loss to Gold Beach Friday, and get their regular season started on the right foot.
The Bruin boys focused on defense to start the contest, shutting down the Rogue River offense with pressure on the Chieftain offense in their own half of the court, forcing bad passes and turnovers to run up a 10-2 lead halfway through the first period.
However, in the second quarter, the Chieftains gathered themselves got into their offense and defensively held the Bruin boys to just six points in the period to ultimately close the scoring gap to just five points going into the locker room at the half.
Leading 23-18 to start the second half, the Bruin boys were determined to take control, dropping ten points while allowing Rogue River just two points half way through the third quarter, before ending the quarter with a comfortable with a 40-27 lead,
The Chieftains kept pace late putting seven points on the board to start the fourth, but the Bruin boys maintained their 13 point lead, continuing to control the game defensively before going on a ten point run to close out the game with a 57-39 win.
The Bruins are on the road to close the first week of league play, traveling to Medford to take on the St. Mary’s Crusaders this Friday evening with tip off scheduled for 5:30pm.
