Now midway through High school winter sports programs, our next outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.
This weeks selection, chosen by Bruin boys varsity basketball coach, Luke Baman, is senior, Edgar Garcia, now in his third year on the Bruin varsity team is well into the varsity basketball season after completing a long season on the Bruin boys soccer team.
Edgar has participated as a two sport varsity athlete, on both the Bruin boys varsity basketball team in the winter, as well as the Bruins boys varsity soccer team in the fall for coaches John Silveira and Ashley Pruitt, working his way to a leadership role on the boys varsity basketball team with his hard work and dedication.
“He is the kind of player who shows up when the team needs him most” coach Beaman said, “whether that means making the extra pass, locking in on defense, or motivating his teammates when the game is on the line”.
Edgar has also excelled scholastically, balancing his athletic participation while carrying a 3.00 GPA in courses such as Physical Science, Business, Recreational Games and Sports, Honors Language Arts, Concert Choir, Geometry, and Wellness with aspirations to attend college and pursue a career in Real Estate.
“As a coach, I always emphasize that leadership isn’t just about titles, it’s about actions” coach Beaman told the Compass, and while stats only tell part of the story, what truly sets Edgar apart is his commitment, heart and leadership on and off the court.”
