At approximately 1:30 PM, Friday, October 6, 2017, the Brookings Fire & Rescue Department responded to 16810 Thompson road for a report of a structure fire within the Brookings Rural Fire District.
City of Brookings Fire Chief Jim Watson stated that a second alarm was called when the first unit to arrive on the scene confirmed a fully involved structure that was spreading into nearby brush and woodlands.
Mutual aid was requested for a water tender from Smith River Fire along with wildland support from Coos Forest Protection Agency.
Coos-Curry Electric was contacted to eliminate any risk of electrical complications as 24 firefighter personnel worked on containing the blaze to the immediate affected areas.
The fire burned a double-wide structure with a connected garage and spread to the immediate surrounding trees and brush which were brought under control at approximately 2:01 PM.
The structures were deemed a total loss about a tenth of an acre of surrounding forest land was burned. The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries to fire personnel on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation and is not deemed suspicious.
Brookings Fire Department was ultimately assisted by Harbor Fire and Rescue, Smith River Fire, Coos Curry Electric, the Coos Forest Fire Protection Agency and Curry County Sheriff personnel.
