Brookings Man Found After 3 Nights in the Elements

On Monday, June 10th, the Wild Coast Compass reported that Jackson County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue (SAR) teams were searching for Brookings’ 69-year-old George Randolph Gower missing from the scene of a vehicle crash near Applegate Lake.

As of 11:25 am Monday morning, search and rescue teams were back out searching for George Gower. Searchers believe Gower likely took Highway 238 from Grants Pass and turned onto Thompson Creek Road before becoming lost.

The Jackson County Sheriff search and rescue received a tip from a resident on Thompson Creek Road that Gower stopped and asked for directions on Friday at 10:30 p.m. Thompson Creek Road intersects with Carberry Creek Road, where Gower’s vehicle was found on Saturday morning.

The search for Gower included ground teams checking roadways and off-road areas. A helicopter was used Saturday and Sunday to search from the air.

At 3:15 pm Monday afternoon, the Jackson County Sheriff’s office reported that George Gower was found alive after spending three nights in the elements.

Monday afternoon, a citizen reported seeing a man matching Gower’s description several miles from the location where his vehicle crashed Friday night. A Jackson County Sheriff deputy located Gower and transported him to the search and rescue command post.

Gower was met by Mercy Flights ambulance and transported to Providence Medford Medical Center for evaluation.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office would like to Thank the SAR staff, volunteers and citizens who assisted with the search!
