The Brookings-Harbor Food Bank has recently dedicated itself to meet local emergency needs and has extended their hours from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday indefinitely.
They have also announced that the Food Bank will be open Labor Day, September 4th, 2017, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
Because of the Chetco Bar Fire, the community-based food bank has extended their regular hours to give extra support to our community during this time of need. The Brookings-Harbor Food Bank is operating in emergency mode, and has dedicated themselves to make available one box of food from the Food Bank every week to all families affected by the fire. The goal of the “one box of food” is to provide a family three full meals for a week. There is no income criteria. When families come to the food bank and tell them they are affected by the fire, the Food Bank will provide them a box of food each week. The Food Bank also has snack packs available for kids every day until school starts, even with the school delays.
The Food Bank operates solely on donations, and during these difficult times, supplies can run critically low. Consequently, donations are needed to fill these goals. Critically needed items include canned meats (tuna), cereal, sugar, flour, and canned vegetables. Of course any and all donations will be accepted, however, shelves are running low on the staples such as pork & beans, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, jam/jelly, macaroni and cheese, canned soups, Vienna sausage, and Spam.
The Food Bank thanks, Grocery Outlet who recently donated 19 pallets of water that was re-distributed to our local soup kitchens, Firefighters, our Food Bank, and other non-profit organizations in the area.
These extra extended hours have not only stretched supplies, but they have also stretched volunteers who struggle to keep up with these extraordinary needs during these extraordinary times. If you would like to volunteer your time, please call or stop by the Food Bank during these hours.
If someone is unable to get to the food bank during normal hours or during these extended hours, please call the Food Bank at 541-469-6988.
In addition, the food bank is taking both cash and food donations of non-perishable items. The food bank is located at 539 Hemlock St. Brookings.
