On Saturday, December 29th, the Grants Pass Police Department was dispatched to a residence just before 6:00 pm where a woman had reported herself assaulted by her son. During the call to 911, a male was heard in the background yelling and breaking items inside the residence. When the suspect was advised that officers were responding, he armed himself with a Samurai sword and barricaded himself inside his bedroom.
When officers arrived on the scene, officers developed probable cause to arrest the 13-year-old, 6’2″ 230 lb subject on charges of Assault IV, Strangulation, Menacing, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and interfering with a Peace Officer.
Negotiations were attempted but the subject refused to surrender peacefully and made threats towards officers. It was believed the suspect had additional weapons in the room with him.
After a short while the subject exited his room, surrendered to officers and was taken into custody. No injuries were sustained by either party, and the subject was checked by members of American Medical Response on the scene prior to being lodged at the Juvenile Justice Center.
