Brookings-Harbor High School announced that the schools football program would be making changes to the program due to a low turn-out as school sports begin scheduling for the 2021 fall sports season.
Talking with Coach Bavaro after Friday afternoons announcement by new Athletic Director Keith Wallin, he told the Wild Coast Compass “We just didn’t have enough kids come out for football this year, and of the kids who did, only 3 were seniors.”
“This fall our football program is experiencing some changes due to unforeseen circumstances.” Wallin’s statement read. “Regardless of these challenges, however, our goal remains the same, to provide the best opportunity possible for our players and their families.”
Due to an athlete turnout that was fewer in number than anticipated, our football program has decided to take official steps to participate in other options. This change also means that we will not be able to field a full-roster team this fall.”
“We are currently pursuing other options, such as an 8 v. 8 player schedule with teams across the region. As a result, there will not be an official football season for the Brookings-Harbor program in the 3A-5 Far West League.”
Football Coach Shaun Bavaro, Superintendent David Marshall, and I made this difficult decision to ensure the safety of our students on the field first.” Wallin said. “Our additional goals are to maximize our focus on training, provide opportunities for our returning student-athletes, and build for the future.” the statement concluded. We asked Coach Bavaro where he sees the program progressing. He told the Compass “The kids that came out this year are our younger kids, some who have never played before. We felt for the safety of the kids, we needed to do something different. We look forward to excelling in this new direction as we continue to build our program back up.”
