Spring High school sports programs are quickly finalizing their 2023 season and with some sports actually concluding, another outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.
This weeks selection is sophomore Lucas Vanderlip, who participated on the Bruins varsity golf team for his second season, and was chosen by head coach Max Whitley for his remarkable leadership qualities and dedication to his sport, which earned him an impressive second-place finish in the recent state tournament, shooting a 76 and a 72 for the Bruins.
“Beyond Lucas’ exceptional performance,” coach Whitley said, “He has displayed a remarkable trajectory of growth and improvement, and his dedication to self-improvement and his willingness to push his limits show huge potential for future success in the sport.”
While participating in Bruins head coach Max Whitley’s golf program, this weeks selection is a great example of excelling in all aspects of the ‘Star Student Athlete’ program, as Lucas actively participates in leadership initiatives within the school as a member of the Leadership class as well as community service projects, while showing determination, competitiveness, and work ethic.
Scholastically Lucas has balanced his athletic participation while carrying a 4.0 GPA in courses such Honors Global Studies, Geometry, Biology, Leadership, Honors English, and Spanish. “I haven’t decided where I would like to attend college yet, but I intend to follow my love for the game in the golf industry” he told the Compass.
“Lucas’s leadership skills extend beyond the golf course, serving as a role model for his teammates while exhibiting sportsmanship, teamwork, and integrity both on and off the field.” coach Whitley said, “and it is going to be exciting to watch his growth”
Congratulations Lucas, we are confident that you will continue to be successful in any future endeavor you should choose to pursue.
