Nearing the conclusion of fall school sports programs, a new installment of the Barron’s Home Furnishings ‘Star Student Athlete’ has been selected. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.
This weeks selection is a varsity athlete participating in the BHHS football program, sophomore, #10, Owen Austin, selected by head coach Shawn Bavaro, for his leadership, versatility and dedication to his team for the Bruins this season. Owen also participates in Kieth Wallin’s boys varsity baseball program in the spring.
“A gym rat!” is how coach Bavaro described Owen, “Always competing and dedicated to the team who’s hardwork has earned him the position as one of our captains on our team, and displays our program pillars all the time.” coach Bavaro told the Compass.
Scholastic performance is an important part of the Barron’s Star Student Athlete program, leading by example showing leadership, competitiveness, and work ethic both in the class room as well as in the community. Scholastically Owen has balanced his athletic participation carrying a 3.0 GPA carrying courses including Business Math II, Language Arts II, Biology, Algebra II, Spanish II, Woodworking II, and Global Studies he told the Compass.
“Owen is a great young man and a pleasure to coach.” coach Bavaro said. “He is a hard worker and good teammate and his athleticism allows us to use him in multiple ways in all three phases on the football field. On the field Owen has accumulated 461 yards rushing, 199 yards receiving, and 3 touchdowns offensively, with 35 tackles and 1 sack defensively this season.”
Owen told the Compass that he hasn’t yet decided his plans for the future, but intends to play football and baseball while attending college and after his time at Bruins Harbor High School.
