Local schools are beginning to move into Winter sports programs, and another outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.
This weeks selection is junior running back/linebacker, #8, Michael Varitek, a member of the Bruins varsity football team, chosen by head coach Shaun Bavaro for his leadership, versatility, and consistency for the Bruins this season.
As a two sport varsity athlete, this weeks selection is a great example, excelling in all aspects of the ‘Star Student Athlete’ program showing leadership, competitiveness, and work ethic while balancing a 3.15 GPA.
“This is Michael’s first year playing both running back and linebacker positions for us,” coach Bavaro said. “and has made great progress in developing the running back skills to be a threat every time he touches the ball, and defensively he was one of the top tacklers for us this year.”
Scholastically Michael has balanced his athletic participation carrying a 3.15 GPA in courses such as Chemistry, Robotics, College Language, College US History, Algebra and Spanish. “After high school I intend to go to college and continue to pursue a career in Engineering” Michael told the Compass.
“Michael is averaging 9 tackles a game with 32 solo tackles so far this season defensively and has just been a work horse for us making big plays all season on both sides of the ball. He has made great progress in developing the running back skills to be a threat every time he touches the ball his first year at the position, is a good teammate, and a great leader by example.” – Coach Shaun Bavaro
