Coach Gonzales and his 3-2 boys varsity basketball team took to the hardwood Tuesday night to take on the 1-5 Douglas Trojans. The Bruins trying to start a winning streak to build on jumped all over the Trojans early and never really looked back.
In the first period, the Bruins fed a hungry Evan Fronckowiak #12 who led all scorers with 6 points off of breakaways and layups. Senior guard Austin Fronckowiak #2 followed with 5 points from a basket and a 3 pointer. The Bruins managed to get 6 players in the scorebook in the first period. The Bruin defense was on point early, only allowing 3 players to score in the period. The Bruins put up 20 points to the Trojans 9 in the period and opened up an 11 point lead.
In the second period, the Trojans added another scorer to the mix and put up 12 points as the Bruins witnessed a scoring spectacle by senior Brig Schofield who went off for 16 points with two baskets and four 3 pointers and at one point hitting four baskets in a row. Junior center Jason Vanginderen took control of the paint in the period scoring 4 points in the period. The Bruins put another 27 points on the board in the period and took a 26 point lead into the half time break.
After the break, the Bruins focused on defense and again smothered the Trojans allowing only 3 players in the scorebook. The Bruins continued to run off of Trojan mistakes and turnovers while spreading the ball to seven different scorers in the period. The Bruins were led by Jason Vanginderen #10 who exploited his size on the low block hitting 3 baskets for 6 points. The Trojans were held to just 7 points in the third period while the Bruins racked up another 21 in the period, taking a 68-28 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth period, the Bruins continued to stomp on the gas as sophomore Logan Holler #1 hit four baskets in the lane and went 1 for 2 from the free throw line for 9 points. Jason Vanginderen hit another 3 baskets inside for another 6 points. While holding the Trojans to just 11 points in the final period the Bruins racked up another 23 points blowing out the Trojans 91-39.
The Bruins will be looking to avenge a one-point loss when they travel to Sutherlin this Friday to take on the 6-0 Bulldogs. In the two teams last meeting early January, the game turned into a low scoring defensive battle that the Bruins would lose by one point on a missed last shot at the buzzer, and suffer their first league loss.
