High school basketball programs are now in mid season form after beginning action since early December, and another outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.
This weeks selection is senior point guard, #32, Josh Serna, a 4 year member of the Bruins boys varsity basketball team, chosen by head coach Brandon Hodges for the leadership, consistency, and the hard work he has demonstrated for the Bruins boys this season. As a three sport varsity athlete participating on the varsity Soccer, varsity Basketball and varsity Golf teams, this weeks selection is a great example, excelling in all aspects of the ‘Star Student Athlete’ program showing leadership, competitiveness, and work ethic while balancing a 3.5 GPA.
“Josh has been a big part of the our program over his career, excelling at facilitating our gameplan on the court for us in real time, while making sure that his team mates know their roles and where they are supposed to be during a game.’ coach Hodges said. “He does all the intangible things you want a good leader to do on top of his ability to recognize the defense and adjust the play call accordingly.”
Scholastically Josh has balanced his athletic participation while carrying a 3.5 GPA in college prep courses, and would like to continue his education attending college but where that will be remains undecided, as programs have shown interest in all of the sports activities he has participated in.
In Josh’s senior year, he has led the team in scoring, averaging 19.6 points per game, 7.7 rebounds per game, and is second on the team in deflections and steals garnering 2.4 per game in each of those categories. Josh handles the pressure at end of games, and can finish and make free throws to seal the victory. “The time Josh puts into the game off the court on his own time has really paid off for us, demonstrating his ability to lead by example, gaining respect from his teammates and holding them accountable.” coach Hodges added.
“To top it off he is a pleasure to be around” coach Hodges said, “and I am thankful to have him be a Bruin!. Good players make people around them better, and Josh most certainly has done that for us.”
Congratulations Josh, we are confident that you will continue to be successful in any endeavor you should choose to pursue.
