Another outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’ as winter sports finish post season play and spring sports begin. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.

This week, BHHS varsity wrestling head coach, Marco Thorson, made the latest selection, choosing a previous winner selected as a freshman in 2023, junior, Lexie Newman. Newman recently finished 3rd in the Special District 2 girls varsity girls wrestling state championships. With this current 2025 selection, Lexie is now a two time recipient of ‘Star Student Athlete’ recognition after being selected earlier in her freshman year.

“Lexie showed grit, toughness and determination this season” varsity wrestling coach, Marco Thorson told the Compass. “Lexie suffered a sprained ankle at practice early in the season, an injury that would end most athlete’s season, Despite her injury, Lexie stayed active while rehabilitating her ankle, and with a few weeks left in the season, Lexie placed 1st in the two tournaments she was able to enter, after putting together a 10-1 record to qualify for state at districts, and taking 3rd at state.

Lexie is also a two sport varsity athlete, playing defense for head coach Brian Carlson’s varsity girls soccer team for the past three years all while participating in school leadership and carrying a cumulative 3.86 GPA in courses including, College US History, College Spanish, College Lang & Comp, Algebra II, Ceramics 2 and Body Structure & Functions Science.

Lexie has been selected to wrestle on the Oregon National Team in the 135lb spot at the March Madness Duels and will continue her wrestling season attending Womans Nationals in April. Lexie intends to wrestle in college while studying for a career in the medical field.

Coach Thorson went on to say that “Lexie is a leader in our mat room and sets a strong tone for our program, qualifying for state every year she has been on our team, and we are excited to Lexie’s senior year, and can’t wait to see what that will bring.”
