With winter sports programs now complete and student athletes preparing for spring sports, another outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.
This weeks selection, chosen by girls varsity basketball head coach Kara Miller, is junior forward, #12, Sophia Bauer, now a two time, two sport recipient of ‘Star Student Athlete’ recognition after being selected earlier in the year by girls varsity soccer coach Brian Carlson.
As a two sport varsity athlete, this weeks selection is another great example representing the attributes of the ‘Star Student Athlete’ program and was chosen by coach Miller for her “grit, and determination on the court, who shows those same great leadership traits in the classroom.” coach Miller said.
As a junior, Bauer is maintaining a cumulative 3.9 GPA while playing two varsity sports and carrying multiple college level classes in courses such as Body Structure & Functions Science, Medical Terminology, College Language & Composition, College US History, Algebra II and Leadership. “After high school my goal is to attend OIT and pursue a career in a medical field” Sophia told the Compass.
“In a season where we had to rely on defense to keep us in games, Sophia led the team with 4 deflections per game as well as 2.6 steals per game, was our anchor defensively this year, and we relied on her to play multiple positions during the season.” coach Miller said.
“Having a student athlete like Sophia on our team helped bring an intensity to practices that helped prepare us for games and we look forward to another season of toughness from her.” – head coach Kara Miller.
Congratulations Sophia, we are confident that you will continue to be successful in any endeavor you should choose to pursue.
Special thanks to corporate sponsors Barron’s Home Furnishings and In Motion Graphics who make this recognition possible.
