The Brookings-Harbor varsity boys basketball team tipped off in their last tournament of 2017 in the SAC Holiday Tournament at Salem Academy High School in Salem Oregon. The Bruins were matched up with the Western Mennonite Pioneers who come into tournament play boasting a 9-1 preseason record.
The Pioneers, whose roster includes 8 players from 6 ft. to 6’5″ to the floor, wasted no time taking control of the game running fast breaks, outside shooting and posting up on the block. Western Mennonite ran out to a 20-7 lead after the 1st period and did look back.
The outsized Bruins struggled as Western Mennonite passed over the top or broke out to beat the Bruins down the floor. When the Bruins adjusted, the Pioneers worked the ball down to the post to either overpower the Bruins on the inside or work the ball back out to the perimeter for a 3 point shot and ended the first half with a 44-29 lead.
The Bruins, who at one point would be down by 22 points fight back to cut the lead to 15 putting 30 points on the board in the 3rd period.
The Pioneers used their reach to disrupt the Bruins passing lanes and dominating inside making the Bruins adjust their shooting. Fouls and turnovers would haunt the frustrated Bruins throughout the 4th period, and the Pioneers would not let the Bruins back in the game scoring 24 in the 4th period while holding the Bruins to just 11 points.
The Pioneers would close out the game with a final score of 84-56. The Bruins will play today against a team yet to be determined.
