After a preseason schedule where head coach Brandon Hodges and his 2022 BHHS boys varsity basketball team fought through big changes in personnel, new game plans, and some early injuries, the Wild Coast Compass talked with coach Hodges on the teams goals as the teams first regular season game looms Friday evening on the road in Medford, against defending league champion Cascade Christian.
“The kids have worked hard this preseason,” he told the Compass. “We have installed a new offense and it took a little while to work out the kinks, but the kids have come together and grown during the preseason and have really started to find ways to use the new offense to their advantage.”
“We take pride in our defense as a team, and that has kept us in games where we struggled offensively. Our defensive rotations have gotten better each week, and the team is communicating better and understanding how to help each other.
We have a young team with only 2 Seniors this year with both Brad Russell and Jake Beaman in there final year with the program, and both are making big contributions to the team. Jake has done a good job of using his ball handling, play-making, and defensive toughness this year, and his leadership on the court has helped our younger guys grow. Brad Russell has had his most productive offensive season so far and we rely on his ability to use his size and strength be one of our leading scorers as we start the beginning of regular season play.
Freshman Jaren Fronckowiak has really impressed us this year, useing his play-making ability to create for others as well as himself to lead the team in scoring. Josh Serna is an important piece to the puzzle, and his ability to be productive at multiple positions making him one our most versatile players and leaders.
As a team, our goal is to win our league this year and we feel like we have the team to do that. Cascade Christian are the defending champs so we have to come out and be ready to play Friday at their place. We have a good defensive game plan and look forward to executing it.”
