The Azalea Bruins football team took the field in the season opener against a strong Bandon team that came prepared.
Coach Thorsen has his team well organized and prepared and told the Wild Coast Compass that he thought “the team played a great first game of the season”.
The Azalea Bruins defense held Bandon scoreless until just minutes left in the game. While Coach Thorsen’s was stopping Bandon, his offense was dominating.
Azalea scored late in the first quarter after driving down to the 2 yard line. Quarterback Kyle Burger finished off the drive with a 2 yard run into the endzone putting the Bruins up 6-0.
With 4:21 in the 2nd period, running back Kallen Christensen #4 ripped off a 40 yard run that started up the middle and then swept to the outside to outrun the Bandon defense for a touchdown giving Azalea a 14-0 lead.
The Bruins would score again before the half and take a 22-0 lead into the half time break.
As Bandon put together a sustained offensive drive mid way through the 4th period, linebacker Kallen Christensen intercepted a Bandon pass to the outside and outran the field returning the ball for a Bruin touchdown extending the lead to 29-0.
Bandon would put together some passes and break away for a touchdown with just minutes left in the game making the final score 29-8.
Coach Thorsen commented that “it’s always a great first game when we can get all the kids in the game and evaluate play and try strategies and plays in game time situations”. Azalea will try to keep the winning streak alive as they travel next Wednesday, September 19th, to Winston.
