Azalea Bruins Basketball Battles for OT Win

Azalea Bruins Jake Beaman #45 tips off against the Crescent Elks center Wednesday night.

The Azalea Middle School Bruins tipped off against the Crescent Elk Wednesday night as the Bruins took their game on the road. The Bruins came out with pressure which set the pace in what would begin as a defensive battle.

Both teams pressed each other’s offense early which led to rushed shots and defensive rebounds for both teams. The two frustrated teams attacked each other relentlessly and as shots just would not fall, fouls and the referees became a big part of the game.

With neither team able to find their offensive game, the first half would end sending them to the locker room trailing 6-9 at the break.

The second half was quite a different game. The two frustrated teams continued with disjointed play with turnovers, missed shots and careless fouls.

However, both teams found the basket and went on an impressive scoring drive in the half. The Crescent Elks would find the basket for 16 points in the half. The Bruins also would battle through what could only be described as a ‘rough’ half of basketball and outscore the Elks with 19 points of their own.

Kaleb Barnes #35 denies the inside pass as the Bruins play strong team defense.

With the game tied at 25-25 at the end of regulation, the game would be decided in overtime. The crazy pace and physical play continued into the OT period and the Bruins would pull away as Bruins center #42 big Brad Russell hit key free throws late in the OT period to extend a 4 point lead.

The Bruins ultimately went on to win the game 31-27. The Azalea Bruins travel to McKinleyville this weekend to participate in the Comet Classic Tournament.
