Wednesday night saw the Azalea Middle School Bruin 8th grade boys basketball team match up with a strong Redwood Red team.
The AZ Bruins set the pace by pressing Redwood Red with a zone press early that kept Redwood Red from getting into their offense as they struggled to get the ball out of their own end in the first.
The AZ Bruins were led in the first by Evan Orman #45 who was unstoppable in the first hitting three buckets and a 3 pointer for 9 points in the first. Austin Dietrich #20 also made his mark early for the AZ Bruins hitting for 6 points as the AZ Bruins took a commanding lead after the Azalea defense held the to just 9 points.
With an 11 point lead to start the second period, Redwood Red made defensive adjustments shutting down points in the paint. Kyler Christensen #25 picked up the scoring responsibilities hitting for all 6 of the AZ Bruins in the second period.
Focusing on defense cost Redwood Red who just could not capitalize on their defense holding the AZ Bruins to just 6 points and put just 7 points of their own from two 3 pointers and free throw.
With a 26-16 lead to start the second half of play, the AZ Bruins focused on spreading the ball out and put 5 different players in the scorebook. Kyler Christensen #25 led the way again fearlessly driving into the lane for 4 of the AZ Bruins 13 points in the third. Wyatt Harms #32, Jonathan Rivas #35, Aulden Perkins #44 and Ethan Orman #43 all contributed in the third for the AZ Bruins.
After the initial 11 point burst in the first by the AZ Bruins, Redwood Red played the AZ Bruins even, staying with Azalea throughout, but they just could not close the gap. The AZ Bruins continued the full court press in the fourth to be sure that the resilient Redwood Red team would not be able to close the point differential.
Just as the game started, Evan Orman led the AZ Bruins with 5 points in the period. Colten Hill followed Orman with 4 points and four other AZ Bruins scored in the fourth as the Bruins closed out the game with 14 points of offense in the final period to take the 53-38 win.
