This week has been a week of season openers for many school sports programs, and the Azalea Middle School Bruins football team kicked-off their 2021 season Tuesday afternoon taking on Myrtle Point at Bruin stadium.
The AZ Bruin defense came out early, stopping Myrtle Point’s offensive attack and forcing an early punt to the coach Daryn Farmer’s AZ Bruin offense. On the first offensive play from scrimmage, the AZ Bruin line led the way on an end around the right side and a 60 yard touchdown run to start the game.
The AZ Bruins had established a comfortable lead going into the 2nd period of play before Myrtle Point opened a hole in the middle for a 50 yard run play that set up Myrtle Points first score on a 2 yard run into the endzone.
From the middle of the 2nd period on, the AZ Bruins overpowered Myrtle Point with long pass plays and a running game that Myrtle Point could not defend against.
Talking to coach Farmer after the game he told the Wild Coast Compass “We have lots of kids that have never played football before, their level of understanding this early in the season is encourage-able.” he said. “I could not have been more pleased with our effort and execution.”
The AZ Bruins travel next week to Gold Beach to take on Riley Creek at 5:00pm Tuesday afternoon.
