On Thursday afternoon, September 6th, Officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers visited the U.S. Coast Guard Station Chetco River to honor Coast Guard service personnel and a local Brookings civilian for their roles in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers vessel which capsized on Sporthaven Beach on April 25th, 2018.
On Wednesday, April 25th, at approximately 11:00 am, authorities were alerted to a capsized boat in the surf at Sporthaven Beach in Brookings-Harbor Oregon.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was working close to the surf zone when a rogue wave pushed the boat into the beach area before another wave struck the boat as they maneuvered to retreat, flipping the boat and capsizing the vessel in the shallow water. Both operators of the vessel survived the incident due to the quick decisive actions of the U.S. Coast Guard and citizens.
During the ceremony, 10 Coast Guard Service personnel were honored with “Certificates of Appreciation” from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for “actions in the aid and rescue of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers survey vessel ‘Graham’ that capsized near the mouth of the Chetco River in Brookings, Oregon on 25 April 2018”.
Brookings resident William ‘Bill’ Krause was presented the “Commander’s Award for Public Service”.
He received recognition for his immediate actions in the aid and rescue of the U.S. Army Corpse of Engineers Survey Vessel Graham that capsized near the mouth of the Chetco River in Brookings Oregon on 25 April 2018. Unknown to Mr. Krause, one of the two Corps of Engineers crewman operating the Survey Vessel ‘Graham’ had escaped, while one crewman was still trapped within the vessel underwater. Mr. Krause’s selfless actions and courage helped save the life of the trapped crew member and recovery of the vessel itself.
Upon receiving the award, Mr. Krause accepted the award “on behalf of all the community members who helped with the rescue effort that afternoon, and also the outstanding effort of the Coast Guard as well”.
