On Thursday afternoon, May 17th, parents of students from Brookings-Harbor High School received a rather disturbing phone call from the school district superintendent stating the following;
“This is to inform you that the alleged rumor of a shooting threat at Brookings-Harbor High School tomorrow, Friday, May 18th, was investigated and is false.
After an investigation by Brookings-Harbor School District administration and local police, it was determined that there is no real threat.
Students reacted appropriately in reporting the concern to school administration, and another student admitted that the threat was part of a joke between friends.
This message is to reassure our school community that all policies and safeguards are in place and are being followed.”
The message was sent out in response to the Brookings Police receiving a report of a threatening note found at Brookings Harbor-High School earlier in the day. Brookings Officers worked with Brookings-Harbor High School Staff to investigate the threat.
After about an hour, school staff and responding officers determined the finder of the note was also the author of the note. The offender and the victims mentioned in the note are all juveniles and their identities will not be released at this time. The offender confessed to writing the note, and according to the offender, it was just a prank they were playing on some friends. The offender had no intention to act on the threat, and the offender and the named victims are friends with each other.
The offender was arrested, cited, and released by the Brookings Police Department for Disorderly Conduct in the 1st Degree. The offender was released to their parents and apologized to the victims for his/her actions.
Upon conclusion of this investigation, Brookings Police Department and Brookings-Harbor High School Staff believe there is no threat to the school, staff, or student body.
