Due to a ‘slope failure’, the Oregon Department of Transportation has closed U.S. Highway 101 about one mile north of Gold Beach due to a potential rockslide at milepost 327.1, detours are in place and motorists should watch for directional signs.
According to information from the Oregon Department of Transportation, a Geo Tech Engineer, a slope failure above the road has been detected with a high risk of failing quickly covering the road.
A hump in the road has been observed forming, and there is a head scarp 70 feet up the slope that had moved about 4 feet Friday and is not slowing down.
Detours on surrounding county roads are now in effect and the Oregon Department of Transportation will be working on getting contractors to the site to either take the slope down or clean up and address anything left on the slope should the affected area come down on its own.
Motorists should prepare for this closure to last several days.
