On Tuesday evening Coach Fulton and his 8th grade Bruins basketball team showed the crowd in their first home game of the season why they are 8-2.
An aggressive AZ Bruin team started their attack at the tip and ran on Redwood from the start. Redwood had troubles for the start as the AZ Bruin defense applied pressure and caused turnovers and confusion as the first quarter played out. The Bruins were led by #33 Serna who had 7 of the teams 17 total points in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Coach Fulton turned up the pressure on Redwood only allowing Redwood to score 7 points in the quarter. Redwood also got their defensive game together and held the AZ Bruins to 6 points less than the first period. Three Bruins got on the scoreboard in the second period, Cortez #34 with 5, #42 Christensen had 5 points, and Serna #33 hit a basket as the AZ Bruins took a 28-7 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter was much of the same for the AZ Bruins as the defense again stifled the Redwood offense. The Bruins refused to allow Redwood to get any offensive momentum and them to just 6 points in the third period. For the Bruins, Blanco #15 hit a bucket, Serna hit a basket and went 1 of 2 from the line, #35 Turner hit two baskets for 4 points and Burger #25 hit a 3 as the AZ Bruins extended their lead to 41-13 after three.
The fourth period saw Coach Fulton get playing time for all his players. The AZBruins ran through their sets as Redwood managed more points in the fourth than any other period. Redwood put up 8 points in the period from four different players. However, the AZ Bruins had 5 players in the scorebook as #2 Hayes hit a basket and went 1 of 2 from the line, Cortez #24 hit for 2 points, Burger #25 added 2 more points to his scoring, Sackett #41 hit for 2 points and Green #40 dropped a 3 pointer from the outside.
After the game Coach Fulton said “He was proud of the kids, they played hard.” “The team has bought into the ‘Family’ and had a great team effort in the win” he went on to say.
