Lady Bruins Squander Big Lead and Suffer First Loss

Coach Schofield and his Lady Bruin basketball team took their undefeated 6-0 record onto the hardwood floor of their closest competitor the Sutherlin Lady Bulldogs. Earlier in the January these two teams met and the Lady Bruins defeated Sutherlin handily. Well, Sutherlin didn’t forget and the Lady Bruins found out the hard way.
The Lady Bruins started out with the hot hand and ran roughshot over the Lady Bulldogs. Led by junior guard #11 Sidney Alexander’s two 3 pointers and 6 points in the first quarter, the Lady Bruins spread the ball around and had 5 different players in the scoring column. Sophomore forward #1 Lexi Schofield and senior center Chloe McCrae #44 both with 4 points got into scoring early on as the Lady Bruins put 18 points in the period while holding the Lady Bulldogs to just 9 points and taking a 18-9 lead into the second period.

The second period was much of the same as the Lady Bruins continued to with the hot shooting. Sophomore forward #00 Sierra Fitzhugh got into the scoring column with a bucket, but again Sidney Alexander dropped two more 3’s in the second giving her 12 points in the first half. Chloe McCrae matched her first quarter scoring with 4 points and Schofield hit a three as the Lady Bruins ran up 15 points to the Lady Bulldogs 9 points in the second period as the went to the locker rooms with a 33-18 lead at the half time break.

But after the break it was if both teams switched identities as they came out on the floor for the third period. The Lady Bulldogs came out with defensive adjustments that included overplaying the ball and forcing Lady Bruin turnovers. The intense defense of Sutherlin held the Lady Bruins to just 8 points in the period and only allowed Lexee Murray #20 hit a 3 pointer and Lexi Schofield hit for 5 points in the period. Midway through the third period the Lady Bulldogs applied a full court press that added to the bad decisions and frustration of the Lady Bruins that then bled over into their defensive game. Sutherlin moved the ball around and ran off of mistakes and turnovers hitting four 3’s in the period and put up 22 points in the period and closing the gap to a 1 point game 41-40 going to the final period.

The fourth period was a continuation of the third period. The Lady Bulldogs continued the relentless press and the Lady Bruins continued to mishandle the ball and miss shots under the basket. Again Chloe McCrae continued her good game by hitting for 5 points and Sydney Alexander hit her fifth 3 pointer of the game in the period, but they were the only Lady Bruin points in the fourth. The defense was much better for the Lady Bruins as the only allowed three players to score in the period for Sutherlin and held them to just to 10 points in the final period. The Lady Bruins had two chances in the final seconds, but the ball would not fall for the Lady Bruins who had a long ride home after taking their first loss in league play 49-50.

The Lady Bruins will be on the road to 3-4 St. Mary’s next Tuesday at 6:00pm.
