Coach Schofield and his Lady Bruin basketball team has established itself as a force to be reckoned with. Coming into last nights game against Cascade Christian the 4-0 Lady Bruins were riding a 4 game win streak with 4 straight wins in double digits.
The 2-2 Lady Crusaders came into the game knowing the had better bring their A-game if they intended to stay with the Lady Bruins long enough to be in the game late. The Lady Challengers came out quick and ran on the Lady Bruins early. Playing what appeared to be a Box and One defense, pressuring off the point and doubling off the box, the Lady Bruins struggled to recognize the new look and Cascade Christian took advantage early.
The Lady Bruins could only get 3 players in the scorebook in the first period. Junior guard Sidney Alexander and sophomore forward Sierra Fitzhugh #00 both hit for 3’s in the period as the Lady Bruins managed only 8 points in the period. The Lady Challengers outscored Brookings-Harbor 12-8 in the period and felt confident at the break.
In the second the Lady Bruins made adjustments and outscored the Lady Challengers 15-12. Led by junior guard Avana Pettus with 8 points in the quarter off of two baskets, a 3 pointer and a free throw. Sidney Alexander and sophomore forward Lexi Schofield added to the score each scoring a 3 pointer. Again the referees kept the Challengers in the period sending 5 Lady Challengers to the line a combined 15 times. Only two of the Lady Challengers 12 second quarter points came off a basket as Cascade Christian went 10 of 15 from the line. The Lady Bruins managed to get within 1 point trailing 23-24 at the half.
In the third period the Lady Bruins came out with high energy and put a full court press on the Lady Challengers who then struggled to get the ball over the half court line. Again Pettus led the Lady Bruins with 4 points in the third period. Fitzhugh and sophomore Lexee Murray #20 both hit timely 3’s as the Lady Bruins racked up 17 points in the period. However, it was the full press that changed the contest as the Lady Bruins began to run away with the game. The press frustrated the Lady Challengers who could only get 10 points in the quarter.
The fourth period was nothing like the first as the Lady Bruins continued to press Cascade Christian who continued to mishandle the pressure. As the full court press extended the court, Pettus took advantage of loose balls and continuously drove to the hoop, getting fouled and to the line. Pettus hit one basket and went 6 for 7 from the line. The scrambling Lady Bruin defense allowed only 5 points in the period as the offense ran up 14 putting the game away late.
The Lady Bruins will be at home next Tuesday against the 2-4 Douglas Trojans at home at 6:00pm.
