A small herd of elk wrecked the traveling plans for 6 motorists from California and 1 from Texas, near Milepost 64 of Interstate 5 early Saturday morning. Multiple units from Rural Metro Fire, American Medical Response-Josephine County, Oregon State Police, Oregon Department of Transportation and area tow companies responded.
The vehicles hit the herd as it was crossing the freeway in the dark, killing at least 1 elk and possibly injuring 1 other that ran away. 5 of the damaged vehicles required tow trucks. Thankfully no drivers or passengers were injured.
If local residents near the crash site discover any additional injured or dead elk, they should report it to the Oregon State Police.
