Warriors Slow Down Hot Bruin Team

Sophomore Derek Bonde #23 battles for the tip to start the game.

After going 3-0 at the Evergreen Tournament at Hidden Valley High School over the weekend, a slightly sluggish BHHS boys varsity basketball team went on the road Monday night to a hostile Del Norte floor and played their fourth game in five days.

The Warriors did not appear to care about the Bruins scheduling woes and jumped all over the Bruin boys quickly. The Warriors put their foot on the gas at the jump and never took it off. Before Brookings had time to look up at the scoreboard, the Bruins were down 0-10 with 4:28 left in the first quarter.

The Bruins did wake up, and with some determined defense and persistent shooting, they managed to get four different shooters on the scoreboard. Senior forward Luke Beaman #0 led the way with two 3’s and hit for 8 points in the second quarter of play. But scoring, defending and trailing proved to be a very daunting task as the Bruins managed 18 points in the second quarter only to trail 24-34 at the half.

The Warrior defense was very tough, with hands in the passing lanes and bodies in the paint keeping the Bruins off the boards and forcing outside shots. And the outside shots just weren’t falling with enough consistency to close the gap.

Although senior guard Austin Fronckowiak #2 got the hot hand in the third period hitting two 3’s, at no point did the Bruins get any closer than the initial 10 point gap as the Warriors again held the Bruins to just 6 points in the third period and broke out to a 30-48 lead at the end of the third period primarily the result of Bruin turnovers.

The Bruins only hit two baskets in the fourth period and 2 of 6 free throws for 8 points as the Warriors were determined to finish with the win. Luke Beaman led all Bruin scorers with 10 points off of two free throws, one basket and two 3’s on the night, followed by Austin Fronckowiack with 8 points of off two 3’s and two free throws. A clearly fatigued senior forward Brig Schofield managed 7 points from two 3’s and a free throw.

According to the schedule, there will be no rest for the weary as the boys will travel tomorrow to match up against the 3-3 Henley Hornets in Klamath Falls for their last game before the Christmas break.
