An outbuilding converted to a “cattery” was destroyed by fire Monday morning. Rural Metro Firefighters found the small shed fully involved upon arrival, with a small amount of the fire spread into the surrounding grass.
The main house was not damaged. Unfortunately, over a dozen cats residing inside the shed did not survive. The cause of the fire was determined to be from a portable heater used inside the shed that ignited flammable materials.
Fire officials are urging extreme caution during the cold weather to secure all heating devices used for outdoor pets and livestock. A fire crew from Grants Pass Department of Public Safety assisted at the scene.
