On Thursday afternoon, on late notice, Coach Beaman’s BHHS varsity boys soccer team played a non-league ‘endowment’ game as preparation for post-season play just around the corner.
The Bruins faced the Marshfield Pirates in a non-league preseason game back in late August and beat the Pirates 2-0 in one of only three games in which the Bruins scored less than 3 goals in the match.
The Bruins started early again, scoring in the first six minutes of the game when freshman Fabian Villa #21 found the back of the net from an outside shot at the top of box.
But Marshfield played the Bruins tough, challenging them on every possession, intercepting passes and challenging traps and ball control. For the first time in long time, the game was played on the entire field as Marshfield denied the Bruins their usual fast break opportunities and not allowing open shots. The first half ended at 1-0 Bruins.
The Wild Coast Compass asked Coach Beaman what it was that he wanted to work on in particular in this game. “I wanted a more physical matchup and to make sure the defense and goal was tested” and that’s exactly what they got.
The second half was a much different situation, and the Bruins took control of the game pressing play to the front of the Pirate goal. On a loose ball moving away from the Marshfield goal mouth, senior Roman Worthey #8 with his back to the goal flipped the ball over his shoulder and beat the keeper with a high arching shot over the keepers shoulder.
Just four minutes later senior Luke Beaman #13 gained control of a breakaway in the middle of the field and got a shot off just inside the penalty box and hit a shot into bottom left corner of the goal. His shot was followed by freshman Jake Beaman #2 finding a loose ball in front of the goal face after a corner kick. The Bruins ended the game 4-0.
The Bruins finished the season the 3A/2A/1A Special District 4 undefeated champions and are now awaiting other teams to finalize the post-season play-off schedule.
