The Brookings-Harbor girls varsity team continues to dominate. Coach Kyla Siri clearly has the girls pointed in the right direction as regular season play winds down.
Tuesday afternoon the 3-2-2 Sutherlin Lady Bulldogs rolled into town and clearly had a game plan in place. Lady Bruins team leading scorer junior Avana Pettus #10 was the focus of the Lady Bulldog game plan as they got off the bus and marked Pettus with one on one defense and double teamed her when they could. The Lady Bulldogs also decided that aggressive play and attempting to move the Lady Bruins off the ball would test the resolve of the Lady Bruins.
With that said, it clearly didn’t work, delaying Pettus from scoring all the way until just six minutes into the match. However, the Lady Bulldogs did slow the Lady Bruins down overall with shoulder tackles and passing lane interruptions.
Senior Anna Serna #17, found the back of the net with 14:00 minutes left in the first half putting the Lady Bruins up 2-0 going into the halftime break.
Coach Siri didn’t trust her 2-0 lead and kept her starting line-up in the game until late in the second half. In the second half the Lady Bruins took over and left no doubt that they are ready for the post season play.
Junior striker Avana Pettus scored 5 times in the second half of play, recording a double hat-trick in the final seconds. The Lady Bruins were awarded a penalty kick after freshman Hannah James #2 was fouled from behind in the penalty box. Senior defender Mickey Fulton stepped up to the penalty spot on calmly took the PK and hit the back of the net.
The Lady Bruins have two games left in season play and will be on the road Thursday afternoon matching up with the 3-3-2 South Umpqua Lancers.
