Bruins Handle Tough Monarch Defense for Win

The Brookings-Harbor Bruin boys kicked off the second half of the soccer season on the road against the team they opened the season against the now Umpqua Valley/Melrose Christian Monarchs. The 5-1 Monarchs suffered their only league play loss on opening day against the Bruins and were bent on revenge at their home field. The Monarchs have been having a stellar season of their own with 28 goals and only 1 goal against them aside form their 0-7 loss to the Bruins.

The game started with a quick pace, but as almost every game has gone prior, the opposing team finds they can not get the ball out from in front of their own goal against the Bruin offense. Most of Thursday’s game was spent with the Monarchs pressed back into their half of the field with a few break away’s into the Bruin defensive half that were quickly thwarted by the strong middle defending team of seniors Zach Carlson and Austin Fronckowiak who have not allowed sustained attacks or legitimate shots on goal.

With 25:08 left in the first half, junior forward Jair Valdovinos #7 got the ball to freshman forward Fabian Villa #21 for the first goal of the contest. The 1-0 lead would hold until the halftime break.

The Monarch defense held it’s own for much of the game, holding the Bruin scoring machine to just 1 goal until later in the second half. Again it would be Villa, who has been unstoppable in last few games, that received the pass from freshman Jake Beaman and put the ball behind the keeper giving the Bruins the 2-0 win.

The Bruins will be at home next Tuesday, October 9th, facing the 4-2-1 Sutherlin Bulldogs at 4:00 pm.
