Douglas County Sheriff’s Remember Victims of UCC Mass Shooting

The Douglas County Sheriff will be remembering those lost on October 1st, 2015, during the tragic shooting that occurred on the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg, Oregon.

“Especially today, we hold close and honor those affected by the UCC Tragedy”.

Commemorative badges will be worn during the month of October by our deputies in remembrance of those affected by the tragedy on October 1, 2015. The inscription on the back reads,

“And while they be in peaceful sleep their memory we shall keep. In memory of those we lost & tribute to those who answered the call.”

You will notice there are 9 bright gold rays that give the appearance of the sun bursting out of Oregon, symbolizing that we overcame and were not beaten. Each one of those rays is a tribute to those we lost on October 1, 2015 and shows to the world we got back up and healed as a community. We clung together as friends, neighbors, family and community.

We continue to keep the victims, the survivors, their families, our community, and those who answered the call in our thoughts and prayers.

The Umpqua Community College shooting occurred on October 1, 2015, at the UCC campus near Roseburg, Oregon, United States. Chris Harper-Mercer, a 26-year-old student who was enrolled at the school, fatally shot an assistant professor and eight students in a classroom. Eight others were injured.

Roseburg police detectives responding to the incident engaged Harper-Mercer in a brief shootout. After being wounded, he killed himself by shooting himself in the head. The mass shooting was the deadliest in Oregon’s modern history.
