Lady Bruin Volleyball Matches Up with Cascade Christian

Sierra Fitzhugh #8 up high for the block.

On Thursday evening the Lady Bruin varsity volleyball team continued league play as the 5-1 Lady Challengers from Cascade Christian rolled into town.

A confident Lady Bruin team took to the floor and showed marked improvement on the very things Coach Lorinda Shew has told the Compass they have been focused on improving in between games. The Lady Bruins scrapped for points and sustained long rallies with net presence and digs.

Senior Mayce McCollum #4 with one of her 4 digs on the night.

After weathering the first attack of the Lady Challengers that led to a moderate lead, the Lady Bruins fought back behind the play of Mayce McCollum who had a team leading 4 digs on the night.

Junior Cartyr Fitzhugh #6 and sophomore Sierra Fitzhugh #8 up high at the net for the block.

Play at the net was also much improved as the front line challenged every play above the net forcing Cascade Christian to change trajectories and forcing errors at the net. Again it was senior Mayce McCollum who kept the Bruin efforts alive, setting up the offense recording 5 sets at the net.

#13 sophomore Gracie Harms powering the spike while avoiding the Cascade Christian block.

But the experience and size of the Challengers proved to be too much to overcome. “It was a well played match,” Coach Shew said after the match, and “the Bruins played solid defense and serve receive”, but, “serving needs improvement as well as blocking.” she went on to say.

Coach Shew coaching them up late in the game.

The Lady Bruins will see action again next Tuesday as they match-up against a powerful 6-1 Lady Lancers team from South Umpqua at home at 6:30pm.
